Our spaces have been carefully designed, taking into account the impact that surroundings have on the work-life integration for our members. We have arranged our spaces in a way that inspires, to allow our members to focus on their ideas and goals.
Community is at the heart of our spaces and the key to their success. From the day we opened our doors, our mission has always been to foster community and bridge the gap between Bansko locals and the digital nomad world.
We believe in striving for work-life balance, and as such we invite our members to be involved in a range of vibrant activities to cut through the working week. From fitness classes, to supper clubs, to charity events - we're focused on providing members with a complete human-centric experience, tailored to their preferences and passions.
Located only a few minutes walk from each other, their central locations offer quick access to the gondola, cobbled streets, picturesque streams and an array of bars and eateries at their doorsteps.
This edition of The Family Workation features Becky and Mark, founder at Altspace, talk about their expat experience in Bansko. The couple moved to the Bulgarian digital nomad hotspot with Becky's daughter. They open up about the expat community, starting a business, and what's it like for them and their daughter.
Gonçalo Hall AKA the No1 Media Influencer of the DigitalNomads/RemoteWork movement and CEO at NomadX Experience, Digital Nomads Madeira and Remote Working Cabo Verde.
Spending a week with us here at Altspace this is what Gonçalo had to say:
"Absolutely loved my experience at Altspaces.
Becky and Mark run the coworking like a small family, you will feel right at home as everyone is kind, interesting and fun.
The coworking space has 2 internet lines, free monitors, free coffee and tea and it’s beautifully design.
My favourite part was that in a small space They have normal tables, standing tables, outdoor sitting and couches which allows me to change and work around the space."
As 550 digital nomads attend the Bansko Nomad Fest this week, this short documentary showcases the nomad fest and asks the question: why has Bansko become popular as a destination for digital nomads or remote workers?
"Kate is a GREAT human being, and a thought-leader of the DigitalNomads/RemoteWork Movement. She will be remembered as a major force of humanity's shift to life centric models."
Kate's BNF2021 eFireside Chat was called - "Best Talk at Bansko Nomad Fest".
Spending a week with us here at Altspace, this is what Kate, Founder of ArtHouse Coliving and The Family Workation, had to say:
"Altspace is a tranquil and well-equipped family run coworking space. It was an absolute pleasure to work from this elegantly decorated space in a beautifully renovated Alpine style lodge with the view of the Bansko creek. Becky and Mark' IT background really comes through in the completeness and thoughtfulness of the tech setup - from extra monitors to different sized private rooms for calls and meetings to having all kinds of accessories available to members. They have also cultivated a vibrant and friendly community through events and activities."

Let’s be honest: A lot of coworking spaces still feel like dressed-up offices. You’ve got your polished desks, your “quiet zones,” maybe a few beanbags thrown in for good measure. There’s nothing really wrong with them, but they weren’t built for digital nomads. Not really.
They were built for freelancers in cities, remote employees working 9-to-5, or founders grinding away on their startups. Not digital nomads living out of backpacks, hopping time zones, and trying to find home in constant motion.
And that’s the thing: digital nomads don’t just need a desk.
The digital nomad lifestyle has exploded over the past few years, especially post-Covid, when remote work went mainstream overnight. But while the workforce evolved, many coworking spaces didn’t.
Traditional coworking still focuses on:
Meanwhile, digital nomads are navigating:
There’s a clear mismatch between what’s offered and what’s needed.
When I founded Altspace in Bansko, Bulgaria, a small mountain town that’s become an unlikely hotspot for remote workers, I wasn’t just creating another coworking space. I was creating an ecosystem for digital nomads.
That means:
Nomads might stay for 3 days, 3 weeks, or 3 months. They need coworking that adjusts to them, not the other way around. Flexible memberships, drop-ins, and seasonal passes are key.
Nomads aren’t looking to just “network.” They want connection. Spaces need to nurture community organically, be it through shared experiences, peer-led events, storytelling nights, hikes, dinners, and yes, the occasional party.
The best connections happen outside the workday. A well-timed potluck, spontaneous mountain walk, or fireside chat can make someone feel like they belong, even just for a week.
Let’s be real: many nomads aren’t making six figures from day one. They’re bootstrapping, experimenting, figuring it out. They want beautiful spaces, good coffee, and community, but without the price tag of a corporate WeWork.
Of course we need fast Wi-Fi. But what people remember is how they felt. Were they welcomed? Seen? Invited to something? Did someone remember their name? If coworking is just about desks, it becomes transactional. When it becomes about people, it becomes transformational.
We're seeing a shift.
At Altspace, I’ve seen people arrive for a week and stay for a season. I’ve seen strangers become soul-friends. I’ve seen first-time nomads find the courage to keep going, simply because someone said “Hey, want to join us for lunch?”
That’s the magic.
So yes...coworking does need to evolve. Not just for productivity. But for people.
Because when it’s done right? People don’t just pass through. They come back. Some even build lives here.
